Doug Smith
Executive Vice President, Sales & Products, Erie Insurance

An actuary by training, Doug is an executive who knows how to marry analytical thinking with storytelling to make complicated topics less… complicated. He’s well versed in advanced analytics and how to translate results to improve the understanding of Customers, pricing and strategy.

After starting his insurance career at Indiana Farm Bureau, Doug looked for a company with broader demand for that kind of thinking. He found one in Erie Insurance in 1999.

Doug worked in the company’s actuarial team for nine years, then moved to personal lines operations to lead underwriting and product development. During his tenure, ERIE introduced forward-thinking products like ERIE Rate Lock, which allows customers to “lock in” their auto insurance rate. In his current role, Doug oversees product, underwriting, sales and marketing operations at ERIE. He’s also responsible for ERIE’s network of nearly 2,200 independent agencies.

Doug serves on the board for the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety and is a former chair of the Research Advisory Committee. He recently ended a nine-year term on the board of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
